Canadian musicians were captivated by the story of the Landfill Harmonic Orchestra last fall when a documentary about the orchestra won the “VIFF Impact: International Audience Award” at the Vancouver International Film Fest. The youth orchestra spotlighted in the film comes from Cateura Paraguay. The parents of these young musicians eke out a living by sorting through garbage at the local landfill. Their instruments are made from recycled garbage. From these instruments, the children make beautiful music that has captivated a worldwide audience. Who could not be inspired to support these children and a story such as theirs?

Several Canadian musicians, currently crowdfunding for their own music careers, have decided to pay things forward to Instruments Beyond Borders, a registered society in Vancouver that backs the Landfill Harmonic and the St. James Music Academy. Musicians pledging support for IBB come from British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Once they reach their personal targets for their crowdfunding campaigns, they are donating any additional funds raised to IBB. In addition to the extra money they hope to provide to the Landfill Harmonic, these musicians are spreading news of their inspiring story, and the good work of Instruments Beyond Borders to thousands and thousands of music fans across the country and around thew world.

IBB is holding a benefit concert for their work May 29th, 2016 at the Vancouver Playhouse, so the boost in support from musicians across the country is especially welcomed as this time.

In addition to support from friends and fans, the crowdfunding campaigns are attracting backers from businesses and music festivals. Among the organizations already supporting the crowdfunding campaigns are the Kelowna company Keenfit and a high end sock manufacturer from Dallas Texas called Dead Soxy. Businesses wanting to get some extra exposure by backing these campaigns, or the benefit concert itself can still do so.
